OVERVIEW

REBUILDING BADEL

On April 25, 2015 an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck Nepal. More than 100,000 homes were destroyed. And thousands lost their lives. After the monsoons, the Nepalis will begin to rebuild their homes, and we will be there to help them.

Your journey will begin in Kathmandu, the ancient capitol city of Nepal. You’ll spend half a day exploring the historic temples and landmarks that encompass the bustling city, and see the some of the effects of the earthquake on many of the sacred ancient temples and historic sites.

Fly from Kathmandu to Lamidanda. From here, it is a three day walk into Badel. At Badel, we will work on rebuilding the homes of several of our staff and also those of others who wouldn’t otherwise be able to do it on their own. Grand Asian Journeys will separately raise funds to rebuild the homes.

Badel is the home of many of our senior guides includes Buddhi Rai, Manju Rai, Debraj Rai and many of our porters. During this trip, we will be camping in tents and traveling with staff including porters and a cook who will prepare all of our meals.  During the days we will work on rebuilding efforts, and in the evenings we will have the opportunity to interact with the villages, hearing stories of their experiences.  A “shower” tent will be available where there will be a drum with luke warm water for bucket showers.

We’ve already run two similar trips in Badel where two groups completed two homes. We will build two more during our November departure.

We will be working with an expert engineer to ensure the designs are consistent with the new government guidelines, are earthquake resistant, that local design has been incorporated.

Our Nepal and Tibet treks and climbs are operated by our sister company based in Nepal – Crystal Mountain Treks – managed by our founder’s family. Crystal Mountain Treks has been in business for over two decades and employs only the best guides with a minimum of 15 years experience. We treat our staff with the utmost care and respect. Each staff member is provided high-quality equipment and paid higher-than-average wages. Our clients have commented that our treks provide a better value (we provide more for less) than other companies they researched, comparing services, quality and price. We are happy to provide references of people who have journeyed with us in the past upon request.

“I wanted to go to Nepal to help rebuild, and it was a challenge for me on many levels. The incredible part is that our guide Sune, and all the porters not to mention the family were there to help us accomplish our goal of doing what we could to help them. To receive the patience, physical assistance, guidance (and the incredible food!) touched me deeply. And as it turned out we did help! A lot of rocks got moved. Wire was woven. Progress was made in deconstructing a house. Plus we had fun! I am still integrating all that I experienced. There is something very intense about being in the vicinity of the Himalayas, the stunning beauty, the vastness, the challenges that reduce the ego and enlarge the heart. I’m glad I answered the call to participate in this adventure.”
